Canadian passport holders without OCI need an e-Visa (apply at least 4 days ahead) or, after a death in the immediate family, an emergency visa from the Indian consulate. Expect a premium fare.

✈ QUICK ANSWER
✓ Fact-checked · Oct 2026

Nobody wants to read a flight guide at the moment they get that call. So this is written to be used in the first hour: what to do, in what order, and what it will probably cost.

What should I do in the first hour?

Settle three things before you open a single booking site: who is travelling, which passport or OCI each person holds, and the earliest date you could realistically leave.

Check passports and visas first. A flight you can’t board is worse than a flight that costs $400 more. If anyone’s passport expires within six months of arrival, or you hold a Canadian passport with no OCI, the visa step decides your departure date, not the flight.

Price two or three routings, not one. Same-week fares jump around hour to hour, and the cheapest option is often not the nonstop.

Ask about a bereavement fare before paying. These are requested by phone, and Air Canada’s policy says retroactive requests after travel aren’t accepted. More on that below.

Book fully flexible on the way back, or book one-way. You don’t yet know how long you’ll stay. More on that too.

Do bereavement fares still exist for flights to India?

A few do, but not as widely as people assume, and they rarely produce a dramatic saving on Canada to India.

Most carriers, particularly in the US, dropped traditional bereavement discounts years ago. Air Canada still publishes a bereavement travel policy: you phone to request it, you give the name of the person who died or is dying plus funeral home or hospital details, and you send proof (a death certificate, funeral director’s statement or a physician’s letter) within 7 days of getting back. The policy covers its own flights and codeshares, requires travel to start within 10 days of booking, and the trip can’t run longer than 60 days. WestJet has historically offered something similar for its own flights. Always check the current terms directly with whichever carrier you’re considering.

Bereavement fares are requested directly with the airline, and only the airline can approve one. A travel agent can’t apply it for you, but can tell you whether a regular fare on another carrier comes in cheaper.

The catch for India is the plain one. Many travellers fly on a different carrier, via the Gulf or Europe, or on a partner fare that the policy doesn’t touch. A bereavement discount on one carrier can still lose to a cheaper Gulf-routed fare on another. So compare, and don’t assume the label means the lowest price.

Keep the paperwork anyway. If you need to change a ticket after a death or hospitalisation, a letter from the hospital or a death certificate is what airlines ask to see.

What’s the fastest way to get to India from each Canadian city?

From Toronto it’s one flight, from Vancouver it can be one flight, and from everywhere else you’re connecting. Nonstops are thinner than they used to be, so check the live schedule before you promise a family member an arrival time.

Leaving from

Fastest realistic routing

Rough total travel time

Toronto (YYZ)

Nonstop to Delhi (DEL), Air India and Air Canada, about 17 flights a week as of October 2026

Around 15 to 16 hours in the air, arrives next day

Vancouver (YVR)

Nonstop to Delhi on Air India; frequency has moved around in 2026

Around 14 to 16 hours in the air

Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg

Connect at Toronto or Vancouver for a Delhi nonstop, or via Europe or the Gulf

Roughly 19 to 26 hours depending on layover

Ottawa, Montreal

Connect via Toronto; Montreal’s nonstop to Delhi has been suspended and was not expected back before late October

Roughly 18 to 24 hours

Any city, to Amritsar, Ahmedabad, Kochi etc.

Delhi or Mumbai plus a domestic hop, or one stop in Europe or the Gulf

Add 3 to 6 hours to a Delhi arrival

Frequency numbers come from published schedule trackers and the airlines change them often, so treat this as the shape of the map, not a timetable.

Here’s the judgment call. If your parent is in Amritsar and you’re in Toronto, a nonstop to Delhi plus an onward domestic flight on the same ticket is usually faster than a Gulf connection, and the Delhi connection is protected if the first leg runs late. A cheaper separate domestic ticket booked on your own is where people get stuck: if the long-haul arrives two hours late, the second airline owes you nothing. Don’t gamble on that during an emergency trip.

For more on how connections and layovers work, see our airports, layovers and connections guide.

How do I get an Indian visa in an emergency?

If you hold an OCI card, you don’t. Carry the OCI card and a valid passport, and you can board. If you hold a Canadian passport and no OCI, you have two routes: the regular e-Visa, or an emergency visa through the consulate. Our OCI booking tips and the visa requirements page cover the ordinary cases.

The e-Visa route

The Government of India’s e-Visa portal asks you to apply at least 4 days before arrival and no more than 120 days ahead. It states there is no extra “emergency” fee for faster handling, and there is no fast-track tier you can buy. Approval can come back sooner than 4 days, but build your plan around the stated window or have a plan B.

The emergency visa route

The Consulate General of India in Toronto publishes an emergency visa procedure. Based on that page, it’s for foreign nationals who previously held an Indian passport when a parent, grandparent or sibling has died within the last 72 hours. You submit at the visa centre (BLS) in the morning, from 8 to 11 a.m. on weekdays and 10 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays, with the death certificate, proof of relationship, ID of the deceased, address proof, photo, and your surrender certificate. The visa is single-entry with a maximum of 90 days. Same-day issue is possible if the file reaches the consulate by 2 p.m. on weekdays. For a hospitalisation rather than a death, the Toronto page says you request an emergency appointment through its SAMPARK portal first.

Vancouver runs its own process. The Consulate General of India in Vancouver lists an after-hours emergency number for death cases only, 604-551-9626, and uses a signed undertaking letter. Which office handles your file depends on where you live in Canada, so check the right consulate’s website first, then call.

These rules are set by the consulates and have been revised before. Read the live page the day you apply.

One-way or open return: which is smarter?

Book the outbound now. Decide about the return as late as the rules allow, and don’t pay for a fixed return date you’re guessing at.

You have three sensible structures:

Option

Good when

Watch for

One-way ticket

You’re an OCI holder or Indian passport holder and don’t know your return date

Visitors on an e-Visa may be asked for onward travel at check-in; confirm before you buy

Return with a changeable fare

You expect to return within a few weeks but not on a fixed day

Change fees plus any fare difference; read the fare rules

Cheapest fixed return

Funeral and a short stay, return date known

Hard to change; a missed return can cost more than the saving

Our guide to one-way flights to India covers the pricing side. In an emergency a one-way is often the best structure because you can book the return from India once you know. But a one-way is sometimes priced almost as high as a return on this route, so ask for both.

What does a same-week flight to India cost?

More than you’d pay booking months ahead, and the spread is wide. As a rule of thumb, the cheapest advance fares from Canada sit well under the short-notice fares, and fares for the same Toronto to Delhi seat can differ by thousands of dollars depending on the day you buy. For a published reference point, Air India’s own Calgary to Delhi page shows fares starting from CA$1,349 and an economy example of CA$2,315. Short-notice prices will usually land above that, and every one of these figures changes daily.

Three things move the number most:

Departure date. Leaving a day later can drop a fare noticeably, or not at all. Check the day before and day after.

Peak season. December and summer are already tight. See our note on Christmas and New Year flights.

Routing. A one-stop through Europe or the Gulf is often cheaper than the nonstop, at the cost of several extra hours.

If you’re hunting for a deal rather than racing a deadline, that’s a different problem, covered in last-minute flights to India.

Should I book a refundable fare?

Only if the extra cost is smaller than the chance you’ll need the flexibility. For a funeral, your dates are usually firm, and a flexible fare is overkill. For a hospitalised parent where nobody knows how things will go, it makes sense, at least on the return.

The practical test: ask what the fee is to change the date, and compare it with the price jump to the flexible fare. If the change fee is, say, a third of the price jump, the cheaper fare is the better bet.

What can an agent do that a booking site can’t?

Mostly three things, none of them magic.

First, we can see all the routings in one go, including the ones with a protected domestic connection, and tell you which will realistically get you there. Second, Metairfare is based in Calgary, with real human agents and 24/7 support, so a call at 2 a.m. still reaches a person, and an agent can price a multi-passenger itinerary on the phone while you pack. Third, we work with negotiated and unpublished fares from 50+ airlines, which can matter when published fares have spiked. Customers have left 750+ Google reviews and 2,000+ Trustpilot reviews. If you’d rather talk it through, call +1-877-700-0520.

When you don’t need us: if you’re an OCI holder travelling alone from Toronto and a Toronto to Delhi nonstop fits your day, booking it directly is perfectly reasonable. Where help matters is families, multiple cities, a connection onward to a smaller airport, or a visa deadline that interacts with the flight date.

What documents should I carry?

Passport valid for at least six months, plus OCI card or visa approval

Death certificate or hospital letter (also useful for airline changes)

Proof of relationship to the person who has died or is ill

Printed itinerary, since your phone may die mid-transit

If a child is travelling with one parent, a consent letter from the other parent

Check travel.gc.ca’s India page for current entry and health advice before you leave.

Frequently Asked Questions

<details class="mf-faq">

Can I get a same-day flight from Canada to India?

Sometimes. Toronto has nonstop Delhi flights on several days a week, so a same-day or next-day seat is possible there if the airline has inventory. From other cities you’d connect, which narrows options. Your passport, OCI or visa status often decides the date more than seat availability does.

</details>
<details class="mf-faq">

Do I need a visa to fly to India for a family death?

OCI cardholders and Indian passport holders don’t.
