No airline flies nonstop from Canada to Chandigarh (IXC). The standard route is a flight to Delhi, then a one-hour domestic hop to Chandigarh, or a train or taxi. Chandigarh makes sense if you are heading to Mohali, Panchkula, Patiala, Ambala or Shimla. For Jalandhar or Amritsar, Amritsar is usually better, and for Ludhiana, there is now a third choice.

Are there direct flights from Canada to Chandigarh?

No. Kayak’s route page for Toronto to Chandigarh says all bookings need at least one connection, and in its data Delhi handles every one-stop itinerary. Total travel time runs from about 19 to 37 hours depending on the layover.

Chandigarh also has very little international service of its own. The Tribune reported in March 2026 that its overseas flights are limited to a couple of Gulf routes on IndiGo (Dubai and Abu Dhabi), because the airport has no “point of call” status, which foreign airlines need before they can fly in. So Emirates, Etihad and Qatar cannot land at Chandigarh, and a Gulf routing usually means two separate tickets. For the reasons below, I would not do that on a Canada trip unless you have a very long buffer.

That leaves four realistic ways to reach a Chandigarh-area address from Canada:

Option How it works Best for
Delhi + flight to IXC Long-haul to Delhi, then about an hour in the air to Chandigarh. Mohali, Panchkula, Patiala, Shimla. Fastest door to door.
Delhi + Shatabdi train The New Delhi to Kalka Shatabdi reaches Chandigarh in roughly 3 hours 20 minutes. Travellers who like trains and have a day to spare.
Delhi + road About 250 km by taxi, usually four to five hours. Big families with lots of luggage, or a Haryana destination.
Amritsar or Ludhiana (Halwara) Different entry points for the Doaba and Malwa belt. Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Amritsar, and parts of Ludhiana.

Which airport is best for your district: Chandigarh, Amritsar, Delhi or Ludhiana?

Choose the one where the last stretch on the road is shortest. The long-haul fare is nearly the same whichever you choose, so the final leg decides.

You are going to Best airport Roughly how far
Mohali, Chandigarh, Panchkula, Zirakpur Chandigarh (IXC) 8 to 18 km from the airport
Patiala, Ambala, Ropar, Fatehgarh Sahib Chandigarh (IXC) Patiala is about 65 km, about 1.5 hours
Shimla and the lower Himachal hills Chandigarh (IXC) Shimla is roughly 115 km, but the hill road takes several hours
Ludhiana Halwara via Delhi, or Chandigarh (about 100 km) Compare both. Delhi to Ludhiana by road is far longer.
Jalandhar, Kapurthala, Hoshiarpur Amritsar, or Delhi + Halwara Amritsar is about 80 km from Jalandhar
Amritsar, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur Amritsar Close to the city
Karnal, Panipat, Kurukshetra, Sonipat Delhi, then by road Nearer Delhi than Chandigarh

The distances and times for the Chandigarh area come from a third-party airport guide, so treat them as rough. Traffic, particularly on the Zirakpur stretch, changes them.

Ludhiana is the interesting one this year. Air India began flying Delhi to Halwara (Ludhiana) on 15 May 2026, twice daily, with through-ticketing and same-terminal transfers at Delhi. The flights are on the Air India network, so you can book them with your Canada flight on one ticket. Say you land at Delhi at 9:30 a.m. on the morning Toronto flight. The 12:55 p.m. Halwara departure gives you a connection of just over three hours, and you are in Ludhiana mid-afternoon rather than on a four-hour road trip at the end of a day of flying. Schedules change, so confirm before you rely on it.

Jalandhar and Hoshiarpur families have a similar choice. Amritsar is the closer airport, but Kayak’s route data shows Toronto to Amritsar trips connecting in Doha or Delhi, so you are making a connection either way. Our guide to booking Canada to Amritsar flights covers that side.

Is it better to fly the last leg, take the train or hire a taxi from Delhi?

Fly if it is on the same ticket, take a taxi if you have many bags and no tight deadline, and treat the train as a daytime option only. The reasons are baggage and fog.

  • Flight (about one hour): the fastest by far, and on a single ticket, the airline looks after the connection. On a separate ticket, you must clear immigration and customs in Delhi, collect your bags and check them in again. Air India’s own guidance gives 30 to 45 minutes to move between terminals alone. I would not accept a gap under three hours.
  • Train (about 3 hours 20 minutes): the Shatabdi leaves New Delhi at 7:40 a.m. and reaches Chandigarh around 10:59 a.m., according to its listed timetable. That is useful only if you arrive in Delhi the day before. In winter, fog can wreck it: on 6 January 2025 the Shatabdi left nine hours late.
  • Taxi (4 to 5 hours): door to door, no terminal change, and the best option for a family of five with six bags. Book a pre-arranged driver, not whoever is standing outside arrivals.

Fog affects flights too, between December and January. If your timing allows, do not schedule a wedding event the same evening you land. See our layovers and connections guide for why buffer time matters.

What actually happens when you connect from Delhi to Chandigarh?

You do the immigration and customs steps in Delhi, not in Chandigarh, and you do them with your bags in hand. That surprises people who assume the bags go straight through.

  1. Clear immigration at Delhi’s Terminal 3 with your passport or OCI card, and your arrival documents if you need them.
  2. Collect your checked bags from the carousel, then go through customs.
  3. Drop the bags at the transfer desk, or recheck them at the domestic counter, depending on how your ticket is issued.
  4. Move to the domestic departures area. If your flight leaves from another terminal, use the free shuttle, which Air India says needs 30 to 45 minutes.
  5. Clear domestic security and board.

On a through-ticket with one airline, the agent at Toronto can tell you exactly which of these steps apply, and they are protected if the first flight runs late. On separate tickets they are your problem. The domestic leg may also have a lower baggage allowance than your long-haul fare, which matters when you are carrying gifts, so read the baggage line before you buy. When does Delhi beat Chandigarh outright?

Delhi wins when your family is closer to Delhi than to Chandigarh, when you are travelling in the foggiest weeks of winter, or when you are arriving with several people and a lot of luggage. A direct taxi from Delhi removes the terminal change and the second boarding, and avoids the risk of a cancelled morning hop in January. It also makes sense when you are spending your first days in Delhi anyway.

Chandigarh wins when you are landing in the afternoon and need to be in Mohali or Panchkula by evening, and when the people meeting you are elderly or travelling with small children and a four-hour road transfer is a poor idea. How much does Canada to Chandigarh cost compared with Delhi or Amritsar?

Expect to pay around CA$300 to CA$350 more than a Toronto to Delhi return, if you buy Chandigarh as a single through-fare. These are Kayak’s 12-month averages for Toronto, so treat them as a guide and not a quote.

Toronto to Typical return range Cheapest / dearest month
Delhi (DEL) CA$1,526 to CA$2,129 (average about CA$1,801) September CA$1,470 / December CA$2,195
Amritsar (ATQ) CA$1,816 to CA$2,349 (average about CA$2,070) September CA$1,792 / December about CA$2,488
Chandigarh (IXC) CA$1,936 to CA$2,362 (average about CA$2,150) September CA$1,841 / December CA$2,732

Delhi is cheapest because it is the destination of the nonstop flights. Does that mean you should buy Delhi and book the Chandigarh hop yourself? Sometimes, if you have a day’s layover and you take on the risk. A saving of CA$200 or so is not worth a missed connection in December. Kayak also suggests booking Chandigarh around 11 weeks ahead, but in the holiday weeks you should book earlier than that. Our cheapest month to fly Toronto to Delhi post has the seasonal pattern.

Where does a human agent help with a Chandigarh booking?

When the destination is not a big airport, the booking is about connections, not just price. A couple flying from Winnipeg to a wedding in Mohali, with a parent flying separately from Vancouver, needs two itineraries that meet in Delhi and end on the same morning flight. Metairfare’s Calgary-based agents work with negotiated fares from 50+ airlines, and have 750+ Google reviews and 2,000+ Trustpilot reviews. Call +1-877-700-0520 and we will price the through-ticket against Delhi plus a separate hop.

You do not need an agent for a simple Toronto to Delhi return that you will finish by road. You do for any itinerary where the last leg matters. For the wider picture of Indian routes, read the complete Canada to India flights guide.

On the way home, do the reverse: arrive in Delhi the day before a long-haul departure if you can, and do not take the last domestic flight of the night to make a morning international check-in in winter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct flight from Toronto or Vancouver to Chandigarh?

No. As of October 2026 there are no nonstops from any Canadian city to Chandigarh. Most itineraries connect in Delhi, with the final hop of about an hour. Expect 19 to 37 hours in total depending on the layover and the airline.

Does Chandigarh airport have international flights?

Very few. As of March 2026, reporting said Chandigarh had Gulf services on IndiGo to Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The airport lacks point-of-call status, which foreign carriers need, so airlines like Emirates and Qatar cannot operate there. Delhi remains the gateway for Canada.

How far is Chandigarh airport from Mohali and Panchkula?

Mohali is about 8 km away and Panchkula is about 18 km, roughly 15 to 20 and 30 to 40 minutes respectively. The airport is around 12 km from central Chandigarh. These figures come from a third-party guide, and traffic varies.

Is it cheaper to fly to Delhi and take a train to Chandigarh?

Usually yes, because Delhi fares are lower and the train is inexpensive. But you add time, and winter fog can delay the Shatabdi badly. If you value your first day in India, a single-ticket flight or a prebooked taxi is more reliable.

Should I fly into Amritsar or Chandigarh for Ludhiana?

Neither is ideal. Ludhiana is about 100 km from Chandigarh, and Amritsar is farther. Since May 2026, Air India also flies from Delhi to Halwara near Ludhiana, so compare that on a single ticket. A taxi from Delhi is the longest road option.

How much time do I need between a Canada flight and a Chandigarh connection in Delhi?

Allow at least three hours on a single ticket, and four if the terminals differ or you are travelling in December. You must clear immigration and customs, collect and re-check your bags, and possibly change terminals before your domestic flight.

Which airport is closest to Shimla?

For Canadians, Chandigarh is the usual gateway, about 115 km from Shimla by road, though the winding hill route takes several hours. Delhi is much farther. Check the Himachal road conditions in monsoon and winter before you plan transfers. Allow a full day for the transfer after a long flight.
