There is no nonstop flight from Canada to Kerala. The usual way is one stop: through Abu Dhabi, Doha or Dubai on a Gulf airline (mostly from Toronto or Montreal), or through Delhi or Mumbai on Air India or Air Canada from anywhere. Expect 18 to 30 hours in total and roughly CA$1,700 to CA$2,400 return outside peak weeks, more over Christmas.

Which airport in Kerala should you fly into?

Pick the airport closest to your family’s town, not the one with the cheapest fare. Kerala has four international airports, and a bad choice can cost you a three-hour drive after a 24-hour trip.

Airport Code Best for
Cochin (Kochi) COK Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Munnar, Idukki. The busiest by far, and the one with the most Gulf and domestic options.
Thiruvananthapuram (Trivandrum) TRV Thiruvananthapuram city, Kollam, Kovalam, Varkala, and the far south.
Kozhikode (Calicut) CCJ Kozhikode, Malappuram, Wayanad (long drive), north-central Kerala. Mostly Gulf and domestic flights.
Kannur CNN Kannur, Kasaragod, parts of Wayanad. Fewer flights, useful only if you live close.

My rule: if Kochi is within about two and a half hours by road, fly into Kochi. It has the widest choice, which means better fares and more rebooking options if something goes wrong. For Pathanamthitta, Kottayam or Alappuzha families, Kochi and Trivandrum are roughly a coin flip, so price both. Our Cochin guide covers what to do once you land.

Calicut and Kannur are worth a look only if you live in Malabar. From Canada you will still connect through a Gulf hub or Delhi or Mumbai, and the choice of flights is thinner than into Kochi.

Are there direct flights from Canada to Kerala?

No. Cochin airport handles Gulf and Southeast Asian international routes plus domestic flights, and its winter 2026 schedule (26 October to 28 March) has no North American service. Every Canadian passenger connects somewhere. The real decision is where.

Routing Typical total time Good for
Toronto → Abu Dhabi → Kochi (Etihad) About 19 to 25 hours Eastern Canada. Often the cheapest and the most popular, so book early for December.
Toronto or Montreal → Doha → Kochi (Qatar Airways) About 21 to 26 hours Montreal families, who have almost no other single-stop option.
Toronto → Dubai → Kochi (Emirates) About 21 to 26 hours Travellers who like a large hub with plenty of onward options.
Toronto or Vancouver → Delhi → Kochi (Air India or Air Canada) About 22 to 30 hours Western Canada, and anyone who prefers Indian-carrier meals and seat map.
Toronto → Mumbai → Kochi (Air India, seasonal) About 21 to 26 hours Shorter domestic hop (about two hours) and a nonstop out of Toronto this winter.

The durations are what booking engines usually show, not promises. A Kayak snapshot in October 2026 showed typical Toronto to Kochi trips of 22 to 31 hours, with Abu Dhabi the connection for a bit over half of itineraries, then Doha, then Delhi. Etihad lists a fastest time of about 18 hours 40 minutes.

A note on the Gulf hubs this year

The Gulf was disrupted by regional conflict earlier in 2026. Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha are operating again, but several non-Gulf airlines are still staying away. Air Canada has extended its Dubai suspension to the end of March 2027, for example. That does not affect Emirates, Etihad or Qatar themselves, but it is a reason to check your exact schedule again two or three weeks before departure, and to pick a connection of at least two hours rather than the shortest one on the screen.

Which Canadian city has the easiest route to Kerala?

Toronto has the most choice, Montreal is limited, and Western Canada is mostly a Delhi or Mumbai story. Here is how it shakes out in practice.

  • Toronto: every routing in the table above is available. For a deeper look at prices, see Toronto to Kochi flights.
  • Montreal: Qatar via Doha is the practical single-ticket option. Otherwise it is a Toronto connection or Air Canada via Delhi when that route is running. See Montreal to Kochi.
  • Vancouver: Delhi on Air India is the straight line, then a domestic flight south. Vancouver to Kochi fares usually sit a few hundred dollars above Toronto.
  • Calgary and Edmonton: a connection in Toronto or Vancouver first, so the total time often passes 30 hours. Calgary to Kochi and Edmonton to Kochi are the pages to compare.
  • Winnipeg and Ottawa: one Canadian hop first, then the long haul. Winnipeg to Kochi and Ottawa to Kochi.

This winter Air India is running nonstop flights from Toronto to Delhi (10 a week) and, new for the season, Toronto to Mumbai (three a week, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, from 25 October to 26 March), plus seven a week from Vancouver to Delhi, according to Air India’s own announcement. For Kerala, the Mumbai flight is the interesting one. You land in Mumbai around mid-afternoon, and the domestic hop to Kochi is about two hours.

What does a Canada to Kerala flight cost, and when is it cheapest?

Most return fares from Toronto fall between CA$1,700 and CA$2,400 in off-peak months, and climb past CA$2,500 around Christmas. Those are indicative figures, taken from October 2026 aggregator pages: Kayak showed a typical Toronto to Kochi return of CA$1,797 to CA$2,286. Fares move daily, and a family of four will see a very different total from one passenger.

Travel window What the October 2026 snapshots showed What drives it
September to mid-November Cheapest stretch; Kayak’s September average was near CA$1,813 After Onam and before the winter rush.
Mid-December to early January Kayak’s December average was near CA$2,581, and specific holiday dates cost more Christmas and school holidays. The best seats go first.
January to March Etihad listed a low of CA$1,729 for January 2027 Back to normal pricing once the holidays end.
Summer (June to August) No reliable snapshot yet; expect it to sit above the off-peak range Canadian school holidays, not Kerala weather.
Onam week Thiruvonam falls on 26 August in 2026, inside the summer peak Families travelling for the festival all want the same dates.

The southwest monsoon normally reaches Kerala around the start of June and stays through September. Hotels are cheaper then, but Canadian fares in July and August are driven by school holidays, not by Kerala weather. If you can only go in summer, expect to pay summer prices. How much baggage can you take on Gulf carriers and Air India?

It depends on the fare, not just the airline, and the difference between one bag and two is the thing people miss. Tickets that start in Canada are generally priced on the piece system, which means a set number of bags, each with a weight cap. Emirates states that the piece concept applies on flights to and from the Americas, for example.

  • Air India: from Canada to India, the Economy Value fare allows one 23 kg bag, while Classic and Flex allow two 23 kg bags, according to Air India’s baggage page. From India back to Canada, two pieces of 23 kg is the listed economy allowance.
  • Gulf carriers: allowances differ by fare family. Always open the fare rules before you pay, because the cheapest option may carry a single bag.

Families heading to Kerala for a wedding or an extended stay usually need two bags each. If you are bringing gold, check the limits in our gold carry rules post, and read the baggage and packing guide before you pack the gifts.

What happens if you connect through Delhi or Mumbai on the way to Kochi?

You clear immigration and customs at your first Indian airport, pick up your bags, and re-check them for the domestic leg. This is the step most first-timers underestimate. On a single ticket the airline protects your connection if the first flight runs late. On two separate tickets, it does not.

At Delhi, Air India’s international flights use Terminal 3, while some of its domestic flights now leave from Terminal 2. Air India itself advises allowing 30 to 45 minutes between terminals. Add immigration queues, bag collection and a domestic check-in cut-off, and I would not accept a connection under three hours on a Delhi change. Four is better if the Kochi flight is on a different terminal.

A real-world version: say you land at Delhi at 9:30 a.m. from Toronto and your Kochi flight leaves at 12:15 p.m. On paper that is nearly three hours. In practice, with a full arrivals hall and a terminal change, you are walking to the gate with 20 minutes to spare. If it was booked as one ticket, a miss is the airline’s problem. If you bought the domestic flight separately because it looked cheaper, a miss is yours. Our layovers and connections guide explains the difference in more detail.

The same logic applies to Mumbai. A single ticket and a three-hour gap is a comfortable plan. Under two hours is a bet.

Flying back from Kochi to Toronto: anything different?

Yes, in two ways. First, the Gulf connection works in reverse, so check the layover length on the way back as carefully as on the way out (Etihad, for instance, lists a Kochi departure around 10:10 a.m.). Second, make sure your outbound and return are on the same ticket, because you do not want to be sorting out a missed segment from a Kochi check-in desk.

When a family is travelling on a long stay with a flexible return date, an open-dated return can work, but airlines restrict how long a return ticket is valid, and changes carry fees. Ask before you buy.

Overseas Citizens of India and Canadians travelling on a passport need different documents. Check the Indian government e-visa portal well before the flight, and see our OCI booking tips if you are travelling on an OCI card.

If your route is more complicated than a simple Toronto round trip, a human agent is useful. A family coming from Calgary with grandparents joining from Brampton, say, usually needs two different departure cities that meet in a hub. Metairfare’s Calgary-based agents price this sort of itinerary with negotiated fares from 50+ airlines, and have 750+ Google reviews and 2,000+ Trustpilot reviews. Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct flight from Toronto to Kochi?

No. As of October 2026 there is no nonstop service from Canada to Kochi. Every itinerary has at least one stop, usually in Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dubai, Delhi or Mumbai. The fastest published times are around 19 hours, and most itineraries run 22 to 30 hours depending on the layover.

Which is better for Kerala: flying via the Gulf or via Delhi?

The Gulf is usually simpler for Toronto and Montreal, with one airline, one ticket and a single connection. Delhi or Mumbai makes more sense from Vancouver or Western Canada, or when you are visiting family elsewhere in India first. Compare total time and the baggage allowance, not just the headline fare.

What is the cheapest month to fly from Canada to Kerala?

Fare snapshots show September and October as the cheapest stretch, and late December as the most expensive. January to March is normally in between. Prices vary day to day, so treat these as patterns and not promises, and check live fares for your own dates.

Can I fly into Kochi and fly out of Trivandrum?

Yes, this is called an open-jaw ticket. It is useful if you are visiting relatives in the north and south of Kerala and do not want to drive back. It is often priced close to a normal return, but online engines handle it poorly, so ask an agent to price it manually.

Do I need a visa to fly from Canada to Kerala?

Canadian passport holders need an Indian visa or e-visa, and OCI cardholders do not. Apply through the official Indian visa portal, not a third-party site. Also confirm that you do not need a transit visa for any country where you change planes, particularly if you are routing through Europe.

How early should I book for Christmas in Kerala?

For travel between about 15 December and 5 January, start looking in July or August and aim to buy by September or early October. Good seats on Gulf carriers from Toronto go first, and the remaining fares cost noticeably more.

Is Trivandrum or Kochi better for Kovalam and Varkala?

Trivandrum. Kovalam is a short drive from the airport, and Varkala is within about an hour. Kochi is much farther north of those beaches, which means a long road transfer after a long flight. Choose Kochi for Munnar, Alappuzha backwaters and central Kerala.
