To find a fair last-minute flight from Canada to the USA, fly out of a big hub (Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal), check one-ways as well as returns, and compare two or three nearby dates before you pay. Fares inside 14 days are often 20 to 30 per cent above the booking sweet spot. Don’t buy the cheapest fare without reading the carry-on rules, and confirm your passport first.

How much more do last-minute flights to the US cost?
Usually more, but not always by as much as people fear. One summary of Google Flights, Expedia and Hopper research puts fares booked inside 14 days at roughly 20 to 30 per cent above the sweet spot, and that sweet spot for US domestic trips at 21 to 60 days out. It also warns that the figures vary by year and route.
Two things work in your favour from Canada right now. First, demand for US trips has been soft. Statistics Canada figures cited by AltexSoft had Canadian return trips from the US by air down 17.6 per cent in February 2026 from a year earlier. Second, there’s competition at the big hubs, so on the busiest city pairs, such as Toronto to New York, there’s usually more than one fare level still on sale a week out. Not guaranteed, but it’s a better bet than a thin route.
The flip side: that same soft demand has led airlines to trim capacity. WestJet, for example, announced it was suspending 16 transborder routes for summer 2026, and fewer seats means fewer fallback options when your first choice sells out. Leisure routes to Florida in school-break weeks are the ones that tighten first.
Which Canadian airports have the most last-minute options?
Toronto Pearson and Vancouver have the most seats to the US, followed by Montreal and Calgary. More daily flights means more fare buckets, and fares at the cheap end are likelier to be left at the last minute.
| From | Routes with many daily flights | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Toronto (YYZ) | New York area (JFK, LGA, EWR), Chicago, Boston, Orlando, Miami, Los Angeles | Frequent daily service from several carriers |
| Vancouver (YVR) | Seattle, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Las Vegas | Short hops with many departures a day |
| Calgary (YYC) | Las Vegas, Phoenix, Denver, Los Angeles | Competitive winter sun routes |
| Montreal (YUL) | New York area, Boston, Miami, Orlando | Busy north-east corridor |
Check the airline’s current schedule for your date, because carriers reshuffle seasonal routes. Our route pages, such as Toronto to New York and Toronto to Orlando, are a decent place to see who flies what.
One practical edge: all of these airports have US pre-clearance, so you clear US customs before you board. The US CBP list includes Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Halifax and Victoria. After clearance you land as if on a domestic flight, which also helps on tight onward connections.
Are one-way tickets cheaper at the last minute?
Often yes, and it’s worth pricing them. On transborder routes, two one-ways on different carriers can come in lower than a return, particularly when you’re unsure of your return date. A low-cost carrier out and a full-service carrier back is a common pairing.
Watch the trade-offs:
- Two separate tickets mean no protection if the first flight is late and you miss the second. This matters only if you connect between them, which on a direct itinerary you don’t.
- One-way travel to the US can prompt extra questions at the border or at pre-clearance. Carry proof of your plans to leave, such as a return flight or a hotel booking.
- Bag fees get added twice.

What are the basic economy traps?
The cheapest fare is often the one with the fewest things included. The usual restrictions: no carry-on bag beyond a small personal item, no free seat selection, and no changes or refunds.
Air Canada’s Basic fares to the US, for example, stopped including a free carry-on from 3 January 2025, and complimentary seat assignment ended on 21 January 2025, per Prince of Travel’s coverage. WestJet’s lowest fare also has no carry-on, according to this comparison of Canadian basic fares. Airlines change these rules, so read the fare conditions on your date.
| Fare type | Typically includes | When it makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Basic / ultra-basic | Personal item only; no changes or refunds; seat auto-assigned | Solo, one small bag, certain dates |
| Standard economy | Carry-on and seat choice at a cost, limited changes | Most couples and families |
| Flexible / premium economy | Changes, checked bags, better seats | Unclear return date, or a work trip |
Do the sums with bags. If a basic fare is CAD 60 cheaper but a carry-on and a seat cost CAD 90 round trip, it isn’t cheaper. Our guide to avoiding extra charges goes through the common ones.
Is flying from Buffalo, Bellingham or Plattsburgh worth it?
Sometimes, for a family of four on a leisure route. For a last-minute trip, usually not.
Canadians have long driven to US border airports because fares there can undercut Canadian airports. Buffalo (BUF) draws Ontario travellers, Bellingham (BLI) draws Vancouver-area ones, and Plattsburgh (PBG) draws Montrealers. A recent airport guide notes that fares from Buffalo frequently undercut Pearson enough to justify the crossing.
The trade-offs are honest ones:
- Border time. You cross the border twice, once by car and once at the airport, and lines can add an hour or more.
- Parking and fuel. A week of airport parking in the US adds up and is paid in US dollars.
- Customs on return. After 24 hours abroad, Canadians can bring back goods worth CAD 200 duty-free, and CAD 800 after 48 hours, according to the CBSA. Under 24 hours, no exemption applies.
- Fewer routes at last notice. Smaller airports have fewer flights, so if your plane is cancelled, you have fewer alternatives.
Say you’re a family of four in Hamilton wanting to leave for Orlando in ten days. Run the maths for both airports, with drive time, parking, and a possible extra night’s fuel and tolls. If the saving is under a few hundred dollars, take the flight from Pearson and skip the border stress. The savings tend to be real on longer, planned trips.

What documents do you need at short notice?
For flying to the US, Canadians need a valid passport. The US CBP lists a passport as the standard air document, and says children need their own passport too. A NEXUS card works only at kiosks when departing from designated Canadian airports, so it can’t replace a passport for the flight itself. No ESTA is needed for Canadian citizens.
If your passport has expired or is about to, the Government of Canada offers urgent pick-up by the end of the next business day and express pick-up in two to nine business days, with proof of travel and extra fees. Delivery isn’t guaranteed if there are security concerns or your application is incomplete.
Permanent residents and non-Canadian passport holders have different rules, including possible US visa requirements. Check before buying a ticket, since tickets bought last minute are the hardest to refund. For the basics on rules by route, see our Canada to USA flights guide.
When can you just book it yourself?
Often. One traveller, one airline, a nonstop to a major city and a fare you’re happy with: book it directly and move on. We’d tell you the same on the phone.
It’s worth a call when the trip has moving parts. That means a family where seats must be together, a one-way out and an unknown return, two Canadian airports to compare, a connection through a US hub, or a booking where one passenger has a different passport. That’s where a fare that looks fine on screen turns out to be missing bags, seats, or protection.
How do you actually find the best fare in the last 7 to 14 days?
- Search the exact dates, then plus or minus two days. A midweek shift can change a fare a lot.
- Compare at least two Canadian airports if you live near both (for example Toronto and Hamilton, or Vancouver and Abbotsford).
- Price one-ways separately from the return.
- Add bags and seats to each option before comparing totals.
- Check the arrival airport. New York has three, and the cheapest into Newark isn’t cheapest overall once you’ve paid for the ride into the city.
- Book once you’ve found a fair price. Last-minute fares rarely fall.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the cheapest day to book a last-minute flight to the US?
There isn’t a reliable cheapest day to buy. What matters more is the day you fly. Midweek departures, particularly Tuesday and Wednesday, are generally cheaper than Fridays and Sundays. Compare adjacent days before you pay, and don’t wait for a mid-week sale that may not come.
Can I fly to the US tomorrow with a Canadian passport?
Yes, if the passport is valid and your ticket is booked. Canadian citizens don’t need a visa or ESTA for tourist visits. Children need their own passports. Be ready to answer questions about the purpose and length of your trip at pre-clearance or on arrival.
Is it cheaper to fly from Buffalo than Toronto?
Sometimes, particularly on leisure routes and for groups. For a last-minute trip, the savings are often wiped out by border time, US-dollar parking and fewer alternatives if your flight is cancelled. Price both on your actual dates and include all costs before deciding.
Do I need a return ticket to enter the US?
It isn’t a written rule for Canadians, but a border officer may ask how you’ll leave and how you’ll pay for your stay. A one-way ticket can prompt more questions. Carrying a return booking, hotel confirmation or proof of ties to Canada makes this easier.
Does a NEXUS card replace a passport for flights to the US?
No. US CBP lists the NEXUS card for use at NEXUS kiosks when departing from designated Canadian airports, but the passport remains the standard air-travel document. Bring your passport for the flight and use NEXUS to speed up the process at the airport.
Are last-minute flights to the US ever cheaper than booking early?
Occasionally, on routes with spare capacity, but it’s the exception. As a rule, fares inside two weeks of departure run higher. When demand is soft, a handful of cheap seats can linger. Don’t plan around luck; set fare alerts and compare dates.
How early should I arrive for a US flight from Canada?
Allow more time than for a domestic flight, because US customs happens before you board. Follow your airline’s recommended arrival time for the airport and the day, and leave extra if you’re travelling in a school break, when pre-clearance queues are longest.
What if my Canadian passport is expiring this week?
The Government of Canada’s urgent pick-up service can have a passport ready by the end of the next business day, and express pick-up takes two to nine business days. You need proof of travel, and fees apply. Don’t buy non-refundable tickets until you have a firm date.
